WHY THEY'RE COOL
Everyone knows what it's like to be different. Well what if being different meant you had awesome superpowers? That's the X-Men. A collection of mutants (the so-called next step in evolution, a.k.a. homo-superior), out to prove to the world they are not a threat and are just like everyone else. They achieve this by acting as superheroes, and fighting evil mutants.
First off, a mutant in the Marvel Universe is someone born with powers and abilities that manifest during puberty. Being a minority, they are often feared and persecuted. Professor Charles Xavier, the most powerful telepath in the world, dedicated his life to mutants rights. Creating the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Here mutants could live in a safe environment, and work on controlling their mutant abilities- without harming others. More advanced and powerful students could become X-Men. Xavier's task force created defend the general population, give a voice to the mutant cause, and help law enforcement combat evil mutants bend on power and domination.
The original X-Men line-up consisted of Cyclops, Ice Man, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl (Jean Grey). Their first mission was to protect Washington DC for Magneto. Magneto would go on to recruit his own team of mutants, calling themselves the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The X-men would go on to recruit more heroes than any other superhero team ever! Seriously, there are too many X-Men, everybody knows it. When Night Crawler, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus and others joined as the all-new all-different X-Men, they quickly became Marvel's #1 property. Later other popular heroes like Kitty Pride, Rogue, Psylocke and Gambit joined.
Coming from a wealthy family, Professor X funds the X-Men. Finding other mutants in the world with the Cerebro computer, training in the Danger Room and traveling the globe with the Black Bird jet.
In the movies, X-MEN, X2, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, the history of the team is very different from the comics. As characters like Angel was never an X-Men, and others like Storm were X-Men before Ice Man. It drives comicbook fans batty. The movies have even played with time travel, changing their history! It's best not to think about it, and just enjoy the action.
