LUKE CAGE – “Power Man”
WHY HE'S COOL
In the 1970's, there were these movies called “Blaxploitation”. Which featured overly tough African America heroes. So Marvel decide to make their own Blaxploitation hero, Luke Cage, the baddest black cat in all of Harlem, can you dig it? He is urban, he is street and he is just a touch cheesy, with his infamous catch-phrase, “Sweet Christmas”.
Growing-up poor in Harlem as Carl Lucas, Cage tried to leave his rough teenage years behind him and find legitimate work. But his friend Willis Stryker went the other direction. Jealous of Cage, Stryker framed him with some heroin and Cage was sent to jail. In prison he was recruited for experimental tests, but when a racist prison guard tried to kill him with the experiment, Luke Cage gained superpowers instead. With his new powers he escaped jail, changed his name to Luke Cage and eventually cleared his name. Noting all the corruption in the world, Luke became Power Man, a superhero for the people, also known as Luke Cage, Hero for Hire.
Luke Cage is super strong, capable of lifting cars and busting through walls. Nothing short of a tank shell can hurt him. He often doesn't like being called a superhero, and has recently been rejecting his superhero name, Power Man. Just call him Cage, jive turkey!
Luke's best friend is Iron Fist, with whom Luke has run a help / detective agency, Heroes for Hire. Recently, Luke Cage has become a father, with retired superhero Jessica Jones. They married to raise little Danielle. He has also become an Avenger from time-to-time, even leading the team for a while. Meanwhile, many of Cage's old street friends, became villains, like Stryker.
Currently played by Mike Colter in the Netflix series, JESSICA JONES, LUKE CAGE and the upcoming DEFENDERS. In the show, Cage comes from Georgia, instead of being a Harlem native. The son of a preacher, whose extramarital affair gave him a half-brother, Willis Stryker.
