DC Comics a.k.a. National Comics

BATMAN

WHY THE'RE COOL

DC is the comicbook company that owns and publishes such characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, not to mention the Justice League and the Teen Titans. DC is owned by Time Warner, and is thereby tied to Warner Bros Pictures. Typically speaking, all DC superheroes movies have been produced by Warner Bros, but there are a few exception.

DC originally was called National Allied Publications when it published the first-ever all new content comicbook in 1935. Through much business dealings three entities, bank rolled by Harry Donenfeld, National, Detective Comics, Inc, and All-American Publication existed by 1938. By 1946 all three entities would join together as National Comics Publication. In 1977, after years of marketing itself as “DC (Detective Comics) Superman Comics, they changed their name to just DC Comics.

DC is most notable for inventing original comicbooks with More Fun #1 in 1935. The first two years of the comic-book were just reprints of newspaper comics strips. DC then invented the superhero genre in 1938 with Superman, in Action Comics #1. They invented the crossover too, in 1940 with All-Star Comics #3. It was the first time-ever, fictional characters from different stories ever meet. As superheroes from National Comics and All-American Comics were bought together to form the Justice Society of America.

In 1993 DC created an Imprint brand called Vertigo Comics. With the Vertigo line, DC published more creator own concepts and more mature themed stories. Several Vertigo titles have been turned into movies (Constantine, A History of Violence, Stardust, etc), but because of their mature nature, most people don't realize they were originally comicbooks.

DC was the number one comic book from the 1940's to the 1970's. Since then it's always been taking a back seat to Marvel.

MOVIE VERSION

The main line of DC movies have been overseen by director Zack Synder.  MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, SUICIDE SQUAD, WONDER WOMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE.  Since many viewers have found the movies too grim, Warner Bros has hired former comicbook writer Geoff Johns to help Synder put their cinematic universe together.
